[info]ladyliberal 2008-08-30 08:03 am UTC (link) Hey, it's Dane. If you're planning to head down to Tucson for the slam tomorrow, I'm going to ask you for a favor. I couldn't get on either of the two overnight buses to tucson, and so I'm currently scheduled to take one out of LA at 9:00am, getting in half an hour after the slam starts (7:30). If I can get off in Phoenix at 4:30 and snag a ride down to Tucson with a poet, I would so SO much rather do that. Like whoa.
If this sounds even remotely like reality, please please PLEASE call me. 201 835 4602. I can offer stories, poems, snacks, gas money, and sexual favors in just about any combination. Also free unicorn rides.
If you're not coming, or if this sounds ridiculous, can you pass on the message to other Phoenixers who might be coming down? Thankyouthankyouthankyou.

seeing as everyone else is doing it, I guess I better put in my two cents
the ideal dream team of the phoenix slam team is as follows:
1. person that gets the 1st highest score 2. person that gets the 2nd highest score 3. person that gets the 3rd highest score 4. person that gets the 4th highest score 5. person that gets the 5th highest score |

This meme is from "What Privileges Do You Have?", based on an exercise about class and privilege developed by Will Barratt, Meagan Cahill, Angie Carlen, Minnette Huck, Drew Lurker, Stacy Ploskonka at Illinois State University. If you participate in this blog game, they ask that you PLEASE acknowledge their copyright.
Bold all things that apply to you.
Did they not realize that most people of lower class and privilege probably wouldn't have access to computers to do the meme in the first place? |

Chesko> As absurd as the opposition is, I can't genuinely agree that even the opposition will make that second argument Chesko.
Unfortunately, none of us can speak for undocumented immigrants, but if we were to ask them, you know, the people that this legislation will affect -- what would they say? I think the overwhelmingly majority would support this instead of saying "No, I think I'll wait another ten years for something better to come along." Bob, out of the undocumented immigrants you work with, would anyone actually say no to this bill? I know plenty that would be upset with people that tanked this bill because it was "too harsh."
We should do what they think is best for them, otherwise insinuates that we know what is best for them. And that's an attitude that I know none of us want to take. |

Hello everyone,
Right now we have an opportunity to help over 12 million people, many of which are our neighbors and friends. And all it takes is five minutes and a phone, you don't even have to look up any information!
The White House in conjunction with Republican and Democratic Senators are currently crafting one of the most important pieces of immigration legislation in our country's history. This legislation is comprehensive immigration reform, which would provide a path to citizenship for the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants in our country (though not without fines, backgrounds checks and various other stipulations) (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,282593,00.html). This legislation caters to both sides of the political isle, 20 amendments are being considered - half Democrat and half Republican and for the more conservative, the bill will allocate over 4 billion dollars toward border enforcement along with other changes to our immigration laws. It's not perfect, but it's not partisan either.
One of the easiest and most effective things we can do is call this number: 1-800-417-7666. This number will use your area code to directly connect you to one of your two state senators. Simply call, choose one Senator, tell them you support the Bush backed comprehensive immigration reform bill with a path to citizenship. Then hang up, call again and choose your other senator and repeat. It takes less than five minutes and your phone call makes an enormous difference! You don't have to look up any information, just grab your phone, call the number and that's it! It is extremely easy to be apathetic, but please, this is one of the most important pieces of legislation since the civil rights movement and phone calls have enormous impact on the decision making process. These people do not deserve to be treated like second class citizens.
While allowing undocumented immigrants to eventually obtain residency might turn some people off -- this is far from amnesty. Immigrants will have to have clean criminal records and pay $5,000 in fees. We have over 12 million people in our country that make up one of the largest disenfranchised groups in America. They can't legally work, vote or drive but this is their home, many being brought here as young children. Forcefully deporting them would not only destroy communities but separate and fracture families. Our legislators have decided that it is time to bring these people out of the shadows. And they need your help! The opposition is extremely well organized and they are one of the reasons a similar bill died a few weeks ago (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19089103/).
This is an extremely contentious issue and I don't expect an email to convince anyone who vehemently opposes legalizing undocumented immigrants but if you do support immigration reform, now is the time to do something about it, please call 1-800-417-7666. I have known dozens of undocumented immigrants who are just as American as anyone else but they are forced to live in the shadows because of an antiquated immigration system. Please help -- all it takes is five minutes. The largest disenfranchised group in America is worth at least five minutes of your time.
Thank you for reading! Jose Magana 1-800-417-7666 (toll-free line to connect to your senators)
P.S. For those of you that are on the fence please continue reading! There are a couple arguments that I'd like to address for those of you that are uncertain whether or not to support this legislation.
( There's more! ) |
